Harlem Killer Whale College Tour
#HarlemKWTour
Our show is perfect for Black History Month (February), Women's History Month (March), Poetry Month (April), or as its own event for any time of the year!
The Harlem Killer Whale College Tour began with a successful performance at Ithaca College, alma mater to Jaylene Clark Owens, in September 2011. Since then, the tour has been seen at 22 schools, with encore productions at select schools. The mission of the tour is to utilize artistic and theatrical expression to increase awareness, and incite discussion, on the topic of gentrification and its effects. If booked at a particular school, the ladies of Harlem KW Project, LLC (HKWP) will travel to the college and perform the AUDELCO-nominated play, Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale, in its entirety. If interested, a school may also request that HKWP conduct a poetry/theatrical workshop centered around gentrification at an additional cost. This workshop will teach students about gentrification, engage them in discussion, and encourage them to share their written/theatrical work that they will create.
In addition to colleges and universities, HKWP is also available to perform at high schools, after school programs, and other educational institutions.
Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale is an extremely mobile show. The set consists of three chairs, a performance block or small table, and a performance space. The performance space can be anything from a theatre stage to a multipurpose room.
Following the performance there is a talkback in which the audience members may ask HKWP questions concerning the production, the content, or any other questions they would like answered. The talkback fosters an educational discussion on gentrification where students may share their experiences with gentrification and discuss how the play may relate to their personal lives.
