And the AUDELCO award goes to....

Monday night we attended the 2012 AUDELCO/VIV awards as 'Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale’ was nominated in the category of Outstanding Ensemble Performance!

From the day we learned of our nomination a couple of months ago we have been so excited to attend the esteemed AUDELCO awards.

The award show was amazing. It was so cool to be surrounded by such successful Black Theatrical works and performers. The show included performances from notable guests such as Cissy Houston, which was a special treat for us since we were on our college tour when we heard of Whitney Houston’s passing. A memory we will never forget!

As it got closer to our category we all sat nervously in our seats. We held hands and said a few prayers. To our surprise as they were announcing the winners, the host declared that there was a TIE! 'Killer Whale' had won the award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance and so did Court at Fort Devens, of which Jaylene’s mentor and fellow Ithaca College alum, Gillian Glasco, is a cast member.

When our show was announced we jumped out of our seats and rejoiced!

Looking back we’re still in awe of how far this play has come. What began as a FACEBOOK status in 2010 has developed into a highly-acclaimed AUDELCO award winning play. Such a huge achievement!

We would again like to thank all of our family and friends and followers for your TREMENDOUS support. Thank you for tweeting, for spreading the word, for sharing your productive feedback. And Thank you to all of our mentors for lighting the way. We appreciate you all!

We are so honored to continue to support the tradition of AUDELCO in promoting and uplifting black theatre arts. We are thrilled to be welcomed into the AUDELCO family!

With Love,

WOW!! WE HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR AN AUDELCO AWARD!!! We are absolutely thrilled, excited, honored, and overyjoyed that we were selected for this prestigious award! We have been nominated in the category of "Outstanding Ensemble Performance!" It is an amazing feeling to know that this play began as a simple Facebook status and has transformed from a passing thought to an AUDELCO nominated play. We have no choice but to believe this was all purposefully planned. We are extremely thankful to everyone who has helped us along the way, from our original producers, Alfred Preisser and Tracy Jack, to our producer and director at the National Black Theatre, Jackie Jeffries and Ms. Stephanie Berry. We have had so many people supporting us along the way, whether it has been someone purchasing a ticket, or liking our page on Facebook, it all has helped us to get to where we are today, and this is only the beginning! We have some VERY exciting things coming up in 2013 that we cannot wait to tell you about! Stay tuned for details! In the meantime we are working on bringing Killer Whale back to the stage by the end of the year. We should have details on that really soon!

For those who are not familiar with the AUDELCO Awards, AUDELCO (Audience Development Committe, Inc.) was established in 1973 by Vivian Robinson, to “generate more recognition, understanding and awareness of the arts in African-American communities.” For the past 40 years AUDELCO has promoted and celebrated African-American involvement in American Theatre. The Vivian Robinson/AUDELCO Awards known as the “VIV,” has become the pre-eminent recognition for African-American Theatre Artists. Past AUDELCO winners have included notables such as Eartha Kitt, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sanaa Lathan.

Much like the Tony's or the Academy Awards, in order to vote for a person or group you have to be a member of AUDELCO. In order to be a member, also known as Friends of AUDELCO, you must donate by October 31. The minimum amount to donate is $50 and you may do that here. Please consider donating not only to support Harlem KW Project, LLC, but to support Black theatre in general! One of our key messages is to support the arts and you can definitely do that by making a donation to AUDELCO no matter how you vote! For the official voting rules please click here.

We will conclude this blog post with a video from last year's AUDELCO Awards in which our very own, Hollis Heath, was interviewing our former director, Stephanie Berry, after she won an AUDELCO Award. This year we will one of the nominees, or hopefully one of the winners, being interviewed! We are SO excited!!

Apollo Theater TONIGHT!

A Message from Jaylene Clark:

I am so excited I can hardly type this message! Tonight I will be competing in the third level of competition at the world famous Apollo Theater! I feel so blessed to have made it thus far. I was just speaking to someone who works at the Apollo and that person said that spoken word poets usually do so poorly at the Apollo that they were actually thinking about taking that particular category out of the competition two years ago! Thankfully I am still in it and I hope to advance to the Super Top Dog Finals in October!

It is an amazing feeling to be a native Harlemite, performing at the Apollo Theater, in Harlem, and speaking about my home of Harlem. It is incredible and such an honor!

Every time I step on that stage I am representing Harlem KW Project, LLC! I went into this competition because of HKWP. The grand prize is $10,000 and I would love to donate some of that money to our company, as well as some to supporting the arts in Harlem. Tonight, as I did both times in February, I will be wearing my HKWP shirt. On Feb. 15 I wore my white one, Feb. 29 I wore my black, so tonight, of course, I must wear a red one! HKWP STAND UP!!

Thank you to every single person who has come out to support me thus far! Tonight's group is my biggest yet! There will be over SIXTY people in the Apollo Theater tonight cheering me on, as far as I know! I cannot wait!

If you have yet to get your tickets and you wish to go, purchase themhere!

Follow me on Twitter for live updates during the show at @JayleneClark! Follow @HarlemKWProject for live tweets from HKWP in the audience! #JayleneAmateurNight

May is a super busy month for Harlem KW Project, LLC and we just wanted to share with you all that we are up to!

After 8 self-booked performances for the Harlem KW Tour, we will be performing our final show for the 2011-2012 year this Friday, May 4th at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Our first college tour has been amazing. Thank you to all of the schools and students that have welcomed us with open arms into your academic communities. We hope that we were able to educate you about gentrification as well as encourage you to support your local arts culture. The Amherst show will begin at 7PM and will be held in the Red Room. We are so excited that our understudy Joyelle will make her debut at this show! If you know anyone in the surrounding area of Amherst please spread the word! The college is about an hour from Boston. Be sure to follow us on twitter @HarlemKWProject for tweets while on tour! #HarlemKWTour

On May 16th at 7:30 pm, our very own Jaylene Clark will be competing in the Top Dog competition at the Apollo’s Amateur night. Jaylene will perform her poem "SoHa" from Renaissance in the Belly of a Killer Whale in the Top Dog competition! She needs to place in the top three to advance to the Super Top Dog contest where she competes for $10,000! If Jaylene wins the $10,000 she plans to donate a portion of the money to HKWP, as well as a portion to supporting the arts in Harlem. To support Jaylene you may purchase tickets via Ticketmaster, or avoid the fees by purchasing at the Apollo Theater Box Office. The Box Office is open from 10AM to 6PM on weekdays and 12PM to 5PM on Saturdays. Let's get Jaylene to that Super Top Dog title!! Thanks in advance for your support! To purchase tickets online, click here!

On May 20th at 4:30 PM, Killer Whale is making its way to DC for a one-night only performance at the well known BusBoys and Poets restaurant! This "community gathering place" is located at 1025 5th Street NW (5th and K) in the historic Mount Vernon Triangle district of DC. Tickets for this performance are only $20 and are still on sale. Encourage your friends and family from the DMV area to come out and see the show! To purchase tickets, click here!

HARLEM KW TOUR!- 3 Stops this week!

2/22/2012

Hey supporters! As you may know, Harlem KW Project, LLC has embarked on a college tour! Our first stop on the tour was a performance at Jaylene's alma mater Ithaca College. This year, we have also performed at Phillips Academy, Williams College, and a performance this week at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. We were brought up by Dartmouth's Afro-American Society as a part of their Black History month festivities. We had such a great time full of laughs, fun, and food!

During our 3 day stay at Dartmouth, we facilitated an interactive poetry and theater workshop with the students that focused on deconstructing gentrification. We also participated in an intimate breakfast discussion where we had the opportunity to sit with students and staff to discuss the importance of black theater and our role in its evolution. The performance took place on Day 2 of the stay, and was very well received by the attendants!

Back at the hotel, we closed the night with prayer (and laughs) and reflected on how blessed and grateful we are to have the opportunity to travel to cities around the US sharing our message of preserving local arts culture!

Check out the photos from the Harlem KW Tour on our Facebook page! This week we'll also be visiting SUNY Oswego and St. Lawrence University! Follow us on twitter @HarlemKWProject for tour updates and to follow the fun!

What a week it has been for our very own Jaylene Clark! After a whirlwind spoken word performance on Wednesday night at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater, Jaylene took first place in the competition and her performance was met with the only standing ovation of the night! Today, Jaylene was featured in the Uptown section of the Manhattan Daily News as well as in the "In the Papers" segment on NY1! We are so proud of Jaylene and want to see her move on to the Super Top Dog finals round in October where she will have the chance to take home the GRAND prize! We need YOUR help getting her there!

We had 60 people come out on Wednesday to push Jaylene to 1st place, and we need another 60 to come out on February 29th when Jaylene returns to the Apollo stage for the Show-off round! Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

We really need your support in getting Jaylene to the Super Top Dog Final Slam! Look out for a blog post this weekend from Jaylene about what this win at the Apollo Theater would mean to her!

This past Saturday, the ladies of Harlem KW Project packed up our bags and took a trip to Baltimore, Maryland for a special event! Stephanie Berry who directed us at the National Black Theatre is currently starring in a theatrical production called "Gleam", an adaptation of Zora Neal Hurston's famous novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God”. Gleam is now playing at the CENTERSTAGE theatre in the Mount Vernon section of Baltimore. The play was phenomenal, and we were so excited to see Stephanie in action! CENTERSTAGE is an artistically driven institution committed to engaging, educating, and expanding the horizons of diverse audiences through challenging, bold, thought-provoking classical and contemporary theater.

So if you're planning a trip to Baltimore, be sure to visit the CENTERSTAGE website to find out what local shows are going on in the neighborhood!
